Alki Point Lighthouse

My destination was Alki but I parked at Constellation Park so I could do some walking. It also doesn't hurt that the tide was out so I ran down to the beach to see what I could see. Most of the starfish were hiding on the undersides of rocks but not this one. This one was keeping cool in this little pool.
When my Alki exploring was over, I made my way back to the car. On the way, I noticed people walking around the grounds of the Alki Point Lighthouse. I've never seen people on the grounds, always thought it was off limits, private property. Usually is, but in July and August volunteer Coast Guard peeps give free tours!
I learned that the exclamation point looking symbol represents a lighthouse or other fixed light. Alki Point light is a flashing light (Fl), flashing every five seconds (5s) at an elevation of 39ft with a range of fifteen nautical miles (15M). Thus concludes my nautical chart reading skills.
The lightbulb in this light is only a 40 watts. The Fresnel lens with its big aperture and small focal length, allows the light to travel much further. Instead of one huge lens, you have several smaller sections. Less material, smaller size, lighter weight, greater distance the light travels. Below we have several knot examples.
An old photo of the light. Check out the giant fog horn sticking out of the side of the building.
The view from the top.
